Development of a personalized digital food platform

-

The personalized nutrition market will grow in the coming years, driven by access to technologies. Currently there is a great lack of data and knowledge availability, and the need to have all this knowledge in the form of services. To try to reduce these barriers in the application of personalized nutrition, from AINIA together with ITI, we have launched a project that allows the development of a digital platform for personalized nutrition. We tell you.

With the increase in medical conditions such as allergies, intolerances, and metabolic diseases, a greater consumer awareness of the importance of nutrition in managing these conditions is developing. In fact, the personalized nutrition market will grow in the coming years, driven by access to technologies that help segment and characterize consumers, such as diagnostic technologies (DNA sequencing, microbiome analysis and analysis of biomarkers in blood, saliva and urine).), but also tools for monitoring and habit formation (smart bracelets, watches, wearable patches, etc.).

New digital technologies have the potential to wrap everything up, making everything accessible and easy to use for the final consumer. However, there is currently a great lack of data availability and knowledge that allow linking the characteristics of food with the particular needs of consumers. In addition, there is also a need to provide all this knowledge in the form of digital services that allow its use to create new digital-based applications and make it available to food consumers by key agents. To try to reduce these barriers in the application of the personalized nutrition paradigm, the AINIA and ITI technology centers have launched the FOOD4ONE project.

Development of a data space for the creation of digital services

Through the FOOD4ONE project we are going to develop and deploy a data space prototype (DataSpace) that enables the creation of advanced and high-value digital services in the field of personalized food, understood as the confluence between a productive pillar of enormous importance for the Valencian Community, such as food production and a pillar of the welfare society such as the development of digital services that directly impact the health of citizens.

With this, we intend to enable the creation of an ecosystem of digital services, where different actors in the value chain such as agri-food companies, technology companies, and even citizens can access advanced digital services that cross-exploit value data sets with the ability to computation and treatment of said data, oriented towards a personalization of food that has a positive impact on health indicators of the population as a whole and business competitiveness.

DataSpace (data space) adapted to the field of personalized nutrition

In particular, a DataSpace adapted to the field of personalized nutrition can constitute a solid foundation on which to build future digital applications and services, reducing the time and cost required to generate data, since most of it could potentially be available on the Internet. own DataSpace. In addition, it would allow enriching data sources that currently appear isolated, establishing value relationships between them. With this strategy, it is expected to be able to provide new services and value indicators related to personalized nutrition for companies, groups, or even for individuals.

Technological advances in data spaces for the food sector From the point of view of data spaces, in this project we are going to advance in: • The development of a technological stack for the installation of these, supporting the ingestion and data storage, as well as providing functionality for proper data management and governance. These technologies will provide a proper balance of high availability and response times. • Expansion of the data space with sharing mechanisms that allow data to be exchanged with other spaces, guaranteeing the necessary security. • Guarantee adequate coverage of the food field by defining a glossary for it and specific routines for the evaluation of quality indicators in this domain.

With regard to services and applications, the potential provided by a correctly configured and updated data space allows us to consider creating applications and services that are not only limited to presenting data from one data source, but that can combine different data sources. to draw conclusions not directly observable from an isolated data typology. For this reason, in this section, in addition to identifying the relevant data sources for the problem posed, the best way to combine different types of information and provide value indicators in applications oriented to personalized food will be evaluated.

In short, the FOOD4ONE project is going to develop the following technological results:

• Development of specific quality and governance mechanisms adapted to the datasets and the feeding domain. • Deployment of a data space in the food domain adapted to the needs of the proposed services. • Set of services oriented to personalized food. • Comprehensive platform prototype for data management and services oriented to personalized food. • Validation of the set of services and data space by companies in the sector.

Food production and development of digital services, direct impact on health and well-being

This project brings together a productive pillar of enormous importance for the Valencian Community, such as food production, and a pillar of the welfare society, such as the development of digital services that directly impact the health and well-being of citizens.

The project has the support of a series of companies in the fields of technology and food production, which have shown their interest in collaborating with ITI and AINIA throughout all phases, providing their requirements, needs and contributing to the creation of a high value technological infrastructure intensive in knowledge in the field of personalized nutrition.
