The United States believes that Russia could advise Iran on how to quell the protests sparked by the death of young Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the morality police for improperly wearing the veil.
“We fear that Moscow could advise Iran on the best way to manage the demonstrations based on Russia’s long history of repression,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said, according to Agerpres.
“We know that they could consider some form of support for Iran’s ability to repress the protesters,” said White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
“We are seeing signs that they might consider it. We’ll see what happens. But this is another example of the present cooperation between Russia and Iran, not only to violate the human rights and civil rights of Iranians, but also to threaten the lives of Ukrainians,” he added.
The White House last week accused Iran of helping the Russian military “on the ground” in Crimea.
“Our message to Iran is very clear: stop killing your people and stop sending weapons to Russia to kill Ukrainians,” Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized.
Iran is rocked by unprecedented protests after the death in custody, on September 16, of the young Mahsa Amini, arrested by the morality police for improperly wearing the veil.
