Air traffic map from the Iberian Peninsula

-

The following interactive map shows where the flights departing from the Iberian Peninsula go. Specifically, the destination and route of the flights that originate in the Peninsula appear.

In this way, the map allows us to observe which are the points with the highest air traffic in Spain and Portugal. It also shows the nodes with the most connections in the peninsular territory, such as Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon, as the main hubs of air traffic.

The map has been developed by the Physical Geography researcher at the University of Santiago, Dominic Roye, using data from the Flightradar24 website, which monitors air connections throughout the planet.

The areas with the highest density of air traffic

The following heat map shows the areas with the highest density for flights departing from Spain. Thus, as can also be seen on the interactive map, Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon appear as the points with the highest density of flights for every 0.5º.

The map allows a clear view of the “highways” of the sky. These are those routes that cross the Peninsula and continue beyond to the main airport hubs in Europe.

You can see the behavior of the main flights that take off from Spain and Portugal. The center of Europe brings together a large part of this traffic, either through Paris or to Switzerland.

United Kingdom-Spain, the largest passenger corridor in Europe

But if we analyze the data more deeply, we can observe other optics. This is the case of the areas to which the nationals of the countries of the European Union travel the most. Flights from the United Kingdom to Spain are the ones that move the most passengers in the entire European Union.

The following tandem of country of origin/country of destination is the one made up of flights departing from Spain and destined for Germany. This can be seen in the following table, prepared by Eurostat.

British and Germans, those who visit Spain the most

The fact that Spain has ranked as the second world tourist destination, only behind France, helps.

Last year more than 82 million foreigners visited the country. This represents an increase of 8.9% compared to 2016, according to the year-end estimate prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Tourism.

But it is that our country is the preferred destination for English and Germans. Thus, despite Brexit, the British continue to be the ones who visit Spain the most. In the first 11 months the figure reached 18 million British tourists.

Next is Germany, with 11.4 million tourists. The third issuing country of tourists would be France, from where 6.7 million people arrived.

The maps of the airports with the most air traffic in Europe

In Europe, an average of 30,000 flights are registered every day. The flights that depart from one of the airports of the old continent cover a total distance of 50 million kilometers per day.

They do it through an invisible network of highways. In many cases, they have the ten airports with the most air traffic in Europe as their departure point.

The previous map shows precisely that network that the flights in the European Union weave. The map makes the invisible visible. To do this, when choosing a data universe, it uses those of the  departures from the 10 largest airports in Europe.
